Principal Duties and Responsibilities
o With minimal guidance, works with multidisciplinary teams of internal and external stakeholders and customers on multi-vendor medical device interconnectivity systems to identify and document applicable current and future clinical workflow, clinical content needs, system requirements and specifications, test pertinent aspects of applications (vendor and/or IS), work with IS to integrate medical device data as needed, ensures and/or trains users and technical staff on operation and functionality, develop related documentation, and provide on-site support during and post go-live.
o Helps anticipate new technology needs and develop a proposal for purchase and replacement.
o Works with clinical, research and/or IS departments to design, implement, and analyze studies for new equipment evaluations and data integration needs. Work with technical team to define and document all interface/integration points and develop detailed plans for acceptance testing. Evaluates safety and efficacy of medical device data integration systems
o Develops strategies and solutions that comply with Biomedical Engineering and IS standards and strategic directions.
o With minimal supervision and guidance, investigates clinical incidents involving medical device data integration, prepares and file appropriate reports, disseminates information regarding possible hazards and implements corrective action.
o Communicates with manufacturers about problems, often suggesting improvements and working collaboratively to make changes; ensures appropriate response.
o Acts as a technical consultant to clinical and technical staff. Helps mentor more junior engineers, analysts and technical staff.
o Maintains a high level of knowledge and advises hospital personnel on regulations regarding medical device data and integration systems.
o Maintains a functional-level of Clinical Engineering, medical device expertise and understanding of workflow challenges confronted by clinical staff. Function both as an individual contributor and team player within Biomedical Engineering and the hospital community at large.
o Provides on-going project status reports both to internal BME or IS management, and user groups. Serves on and may lead internal and/or external hospital committees and working groups.
o Provides 24X7 on-call response to clinical users, technical problems, administrative, management, and/or vendors to ensure appropriate and timely responses to all issues post go-live. Provide quality customer service and serve as an exemplary representative of Biomedical Engineering. On-going communication, feedback and follow-through with customers/peers are essential.
o Works with project management to over-see project, using recognized methodology including activities such as:
o Definition of project scope and objectives
o Conduct regular project status meetings and document status reports for distribution
o Workflow and Data Analysis
o Functional requirements definition
o System testing/quality assurance
o User Training
o Interface/Integration Testing
o Post-implementation/on-going support
o Feasibility and Cost/Benefit Studies
o Documentation
o MS in Clinical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering or related engineering discipline required plus 5 years of relevant experience
BS or BET and equivalent experience acceptable with 7 years of relevant experience
CE certification desirable
o Minimum of five years' experience in hospital-based engineering is required.
o Ability to diagnose and solve technical and/or system problems of a high degree of complexity
o Ability to work as part of a large multi-disciplinary team
o Knowledge of supported clinical and computing hardware, operating systems and related applications.
o Ability to evaluate, interpret and analyze user information draws conclusions, generate requirements, and develop appropriate solutions.
o Strong level of computer literacy and the use of Microsoft Office Suite, databases, drawings, statistics, engineering tools and programming.
Supervisory Responsibility
May manage a team of engineers, analysts and technicians at the project level
Responsible for assigning work to project team members, providing guidance and direction, and ensuring the timeliness and quality of work delivered by project team members
